This week, I read a well known blogger quote on their site these words from Baal Shem Tov:
Let me fall if I must. The one I will become will catch me.
This blogger vaguely professes to be a Christian, so it puzzles me when these types of things ideas are promoted to many people.
I find this quote very poetic but very flimsy when it comes to the truth.
Firstly, I am not capable of saving myself. It is why I NEED Jesus! It is why Jesus came. It is why he went to the cross, willingly let himself be nailed to it and hung there until death. So no, I'm not going to trust myself to catch me when I fall.
Secondly, even if I was to be a worthy saviour, how can I know who I will be in the future? Sometimes, I still wonder who I am right now, in the present!
So, how do I know who I am? How do you know who you are?
It is always trustworthy to go back to what God says.
I Am A Child of God
To all who have received him - those who believe in his name - he has given the right to become God's children. ~John 1:12
Are we all not longing to belong somewhere in this world? To be a part of something?
God has given us the right to be part of HIS family. To be his child is a privilege. He is the perfect parent. He makes no mistakes. He knows how to give generously, how to guide in love and how to grow us into all we are to be.
I Am Free
For freedom Christ has set us free; stand firm therefore, and do not submit again to the yoke of slavery. ~Galatians 5:1
Free! Think about that. Free from the weight of guilt. Free from the burden to prove ourselves. Free from the power of sin and death. Free from the worry of what other people think of me. Free!
I Am Forgiven
If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just and will forgive us our sins and purify us from all unrighteousness. ~1 John 1:9
God has never wanted to condemn us for our sins. He isn't waiting in the shadows ready to pounce on us the minute we mess up. He is running to meet us with arms opened wide to lovingly scoop us in his arms. Yes, he wants us to confess our sins - mainly because it is for our own good. To be forgiven by God is a beautiful thing to be.
I Am A New Creation
So then, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation; what is old has passed away - look what is new has come. ~2 Corinthians 5:17
Part of the freedom God gives us is the freedom to start new. Whatever you were before knowing Christ, you don't have to be that anymore. It is a continual process as we walk with Christ, remembering we no longer have to live the way we did before. We can live in freedom. We have the power of Jesus working in us to will and to act according to his will.
I Am An Heir
So you are no longer a slave but a son (daughter), and if you are a son (daughter), then you are also an heir through God. ~Galatians 4:7
An heir! An heir to what though? I am no theologian but my understanding is we inherit heaven. Heaven will be our home. In heaven we will have an unending and face to face relationship with Christ! There will be no tears, no sickness, no pain and no death. All the riches of God will be shared with us.
I Am Loved
We know, brothers and sisters loved by God, that he has chosen you. ~1 Thessalonians 1:4
This last one is my absolute favourite. I am loved by God! YOU are loved by God.
The song Good Good Father by Chris Tomlin speaks so much about who God is and how good he is but the chorus also reminds us who we are. At the end of the day, I am loved by God. It's who I am.
If you are ever unsure of who you are, sweet friend, you are love by God. That is who you are.
